Can You Drink Beer On a Low Carb Diet?

You have made your plan for eating right and exercising properly. You may have even hired a trainer to help keep yourself consistent and accountable with your new goals.

But, you aren’t quite ready to give up your occasional beer. Well, now you don’t have to!

For decades beer and diets didn’t mix but luckily, now, drinking beer on a low carb diet is very doable!

Many individuals are becoming increasingly health conscious which has lead to an industry-wide push to produce “lighter” and “low calorie” beers.

Nowadays, many people are finding the perfect beer to fit into their low carb diet. Here are some tips to doing just that.

Why Normal Beer On Low Carb Diets Doesn’t Work

By nature, beer is very high in calories. In fact, after fat, alcohol is the second most calorie dense nutrient with 7 calories in each gram.

Our bodies cannot store alcohol like they can other forms of calories.

As a consequence, our body prioritizes metabolizing alcohol first for energy. This means that other processes such as burning fat and absorbing nutrients are disrupted.

On top of the alcohol that your body has to get rid of, your body also has to burn the carbohydrates that result from the beer’s high starch content.

If you aren’t careful, you can easily rack up hundreds of extra calories with normal beer on a fun night out with your friends.

If this were 10 years ago, you may have had to choose between staying home or throwing your diet out the window. Now you don’t have to make that choice, because beer companies are making your life easy with plenty of delicious low-calorie options!

Drinking Keto Friendly Beer On Your Diet

So how can you enjoy a keto friendly beer, or a low carb IPA and not wreck your diet? Now days nearly all forms of beer will have a “light” version to help offset some of the cons of regular beer as mentioned above.

Many craft beer breweries specialize in retaining the unique taste and flavors of craft beers while also keeping the carbs low. Light beers have only a fraction of the carbs that their regular counterparts do.

Additionally, some options like red and white wine have only 1/4 of the carbs that regular beers have. And if you are a fan of rum, whiskey, gin or vodka, you can enjoy without any of the guilt as these are completely carb free!

As always, moderation is key with alcohol consumption or any diet. Even the lowest carb beers, if drank beyond proper moderation can still wreak havoc on your diet.

Drink, Diet, and Enjoy!

Finding the right keto friendly beer, or low carb IPA, could be the perfect complement to your healthy lifestyle. Now you just have to get out and try and find the ones that fits your liking!
